The Bay One Acts Festival (BOA), established in 2001, provides an annual gathering space for artists to create and produce new work, share and swap new ideas, and foster new relationships which will grow future collaborations with one another. BOA produces adventurous and innovative original short plays of all genres, and creates community through our producing partners, artists, and audiences. We love new work that pushes theatrical boundaries, experiments with form, or re-imagines the actor-audience relationship. The 2013 festival will feature two programs of plays from 13 BOA Producing Partner Theater Companies performed in rep at Tides Theatre in San Francisco near Union Square from September 14th – October 5th. There will be over 75 Bay Area theater artists involved in producing the BOA festival this year. The festival will also feature a Spotlight Series of discussions for each play as well as a published 2013 BOA Anthology of all the scripts in the festival that will be available for purchase.
The Bay One Acts Festival is principally produced by Three Wise Monkeys Theatre Company, a 501 c3 nonprofit arts organization. Three Wise Monkeys was founded by Richard Bernier, Dawson Moore and Aoise Stratford in 2001. Richard Bernier served 3WM as its Executive Director for 9 years and was the vital life force that sustained and nurtured BOA. Richard passed away in October 2010 as after a long struggle with cancer. BOA is dedicated to his life and legacy.
Jessica Holt was the Artistic Director of BOA from 2009 -2012, and she fostered the community aspect of the festival that has made it one of the most dynamic opportunities to engage with local theater companies and artists in the Bay Area. Sara Staley has taken over as Artistic Director for the 2013 BOA Festival. She hopes to continue the momentum the festival has gained the last few years by bringing new Producing Partners, playwrights, actors, and designers into the fold for 2013, and to continue to support the growth of this talented community of theater professionals.
